The other box trick
The following content was adapted from a OneNote page
Normally, Pokémon Box requires a GBA console to use it, but what if I told you that if you have the Game Boy Player, you can do everything on the GameCube?
REQUIREMENTS
- GameCube (no backcompat Wiis)
- Game Boy Player
- SD Gecko or SD2SP2
- Game Boy Advance-GameCube Link Cable
- A way to launch Homebrew
- Swiss
- A Pokémon Gen 3 game (or compatible flashcart with the ROM)
- Pokémon Box and Game Boy Player Start-Up Disc ISOs
- Use CleanRip to dump the games to ISOs.
NOT REQUIRED
- Game Boy Advance console
- Game Boy Interface (doesn't work with this)
note
Your method of launching Homebrew must allow disc drive access or the Game Boy Player will not function.
If this applies to you, the below example setup with Smash Melee might help.
Example Home Bros. + brosexec setup
If you have Melee like I do you can do this to get into Swiss/use Homebrew. brosexec takes up only 14 blocks.
You need access to a hacked Wii or GameCube with GCMM for initial setup and the memory card exploit is mutually exclusive with 20XXTE.
- Copy the Home Bros exploit to your memory card
- Copy the libogc2 version of brosexec to the same memory card
- Download the brosexec_nihusu_sd2sp2_dolxz.zip file and copy the boot.gci file over
- Copy swiss.dol to your SD Gecko/SD2SP2 and name it autoexec.dol
- Copy autoexec.dol to igr.dol
To exploit, boot Melee, go to Multiplayer, and press A on Name Entry at the same time you open the disc cover.
If you don't open the disc cover you will not have disc drive access
The process
- Open Swiss
- Edit Swiss's settings and make sure In-Game Reset is on
- Connect the GBA-GCN cable to the Link Port on the Player, and Port 2 on the GameCube
- Run the Game Boy Player software and boot the game
- Leave it on the title screen!
- Use the official software. Game Boy Interface will NOT work.
- In-Game Reset with Down D-Pad, B and R
- This will reset the GameCube instead of going back to Swiss for some reason
- Run Swiss again, same method as before
- Run Pokémon Box this time
- Select either option, and then wait for the game to loop the title screen animation and eventually Box will connect to it!
- Wait times for Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald are about 2:35
- FireRed/LeafGreen about 1:11
- It may take double that if you're unlucky, if it's longer than even that you probably messed it up, try again
- At any point you can IGR and load GBI and the game will still be running
- If you do this with the official software the game will reset
Go back
